UP 1848 is a GE B40-8 which was built as SSW (Cotton Belt) 8049 in August of 1988, became UP 5657, and renumbered to 1848 to make way for AC4400s. Union Pacific Railroad generously donated it to the Illinois Railway Museum recently just before the Diesel Days event 2014. As it was inspected and said to be fully operable for the event, it made a great show despite a few minor problems limiting how long it could be running.

The issue was that the radiator cooling fan is powered by an AC current motor, and something with its phases was messed up, limiting how much the engine could be cooled, therefore it could only be running for a certain period of time before having to be put back for the engine to cool simply by sitting and not running. High engine temperature can have some drastic problems if ignored, and risking that by keeping it running is too big even if the crowds want it running.

On 7/18/14, I filmed a complete walkaround, tour around the long hood, nose, and cab, some testing of it, and it in action during Pass in Review for the Diesel Days on Saturday 7/19/14. Thank you Union Pacific for donating this closer to modern locomotive!
